Argument Between 2 Brothers Leads To Fatal Stabbing

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com)  — Authorities say a fight between two brothers in Long Beach led to a deadly stabbing.

Officials said the brother accused of murdering his sibling has been arrested.

Police were dispatched to the area of Elm Avenue and Louise Street about 12:15 a.m. Saturday.

Authorities said they found Geovany Ortiz, 20, of Long Beach with a stab wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The stabbing victim’s brother, Israel Ortiz, 22, was located near the crime scene and taken into custody, said police.  He was booked on suspicion of murder.

Ortiz’s bail was set at $1,000,000, according to LA County Sheriff’s inmate records.

Cespedes’ 4 Runs Leads A’s Over Halos 10-6

  OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Yoenis Cespedes drove in four runs on his most productive day since winning the Home Run Derby, and the Oakland Athletics rallied from five runs down to beat the Los Angeles Angels 10-6 on Sunday.

Cespedes snapped an 0-for-13 funk with a two-run double in the third inning, added an RBI single in the fifth and then doubled in Josh Donaldson as part of a five-run sixth.

Eric Sogard added three hits and two RBIs, and Brandon Moss also drove in a pair of runs for Oakland. The A’s (62-43) moved a season-high 19 games over .500 and extended their lead to six games over Texas in the AL West.

Erick Aybar doubled and tripled for the Angels, who placed Albert Pujols on the disabled list before the game with a tear in his left foot that could end his season.

The A’s took two of the first three games in this series primarily on the strength of their starting pitching. They got a big boost from their offense in the finale and a little help from the Angels’ defense along the way.

Cespedes provided the biggest lift with his third three-hit game of the season. The Cuban slugger struck out looking in his first at-bat before his double in the third helped jump-start Oakland’s comeback from a 5-0 deficit.

He later hit a towering popup in the fifth that landed for an RBI single when Angels center fielder Mike Trout lost it in the sun. The ball fell between Trout and right fielder Kole Calhoun as Moss scored from first with the tying run.

Trout had more fielding problems in the sixth after the Angels went up 6-5 on Aybar’s double.

Stephen Vogt hit a sinking fly to center that bounced in front of Trout just as he nearly collided with Josh Hamilton racing over from left field. The ball landed in front of the two outfielders and rolled to the warning track as both players fell to the turf. Seth Smith scored on the play to tie it 6-all.

Sogard followed with a single off reliever J.C. Gutierrez (0-2) to drive in Vogt with the go-ahead run, then scored on Jed Lowrie’s RBI double to give the A’s an 8-6 lead. Moss and Cespedes also had RBIs in the inning.

Jesse Chavez (2-2) pitched two innings for the win.

The Angels lost for the seventh time in nine road games and fell a season-high 13 games out of first place.

Before the game, manager Mike Scioscia announced that Pujols had been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a partially torn plantar fascia, an injury that has bothered him most of the season. He aggravated it while running out a single in the ninth inning of Friday’s 6-4 loss to Oakland.

“This is something that, talking to Albert, has been going on for six or seven years,” Scioscia said. “It’s been going on for a long time and he’s managed it. This is a big blow to our team right now.”

Although surgery seems unlikely, Scioscia did not rule out Pujols being sidelined the remainder of the season.

The news didn’t get any better on the field.

Right-hander Tommy Hanson was staked to a five-run lead after two innings but struggled with his command and was gone in the fifth. Hanson struck out five and allowed four hits but walked five — three of which scored.

Oakland starter Jarrod Parker wasn’t much better. He walked a career-high seven, but the A’s got him off the hook.

The Angels jumped on Parker early when they scored four times and sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning. Howie Kendrick and Mark Trumbo both drove in runs, and Alberto Callaspo added a two-run single.

After Aybar tripled leading off the second, Kendrick hit into a fielder’s choice to make it 5-0.

Ennis-Hill leads GB challenge

Jessica Ennis-Hill: Will hopefully overcome injury problems to lead the squad

British Athletics have announced their squad for next month's World Championships in Moscow, with Olympic champions Mo Farah and Jess Ennis-Hill leading the team's medal challenge.

Included in the 60-strong squad along with Farah, who will contest both the 5000m and 10,000m, and Ennis-Hill, is the 2007 world 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu and defending 400m hurdles champion Dai Greene.

The second fastest Briton of all time James Dasolu, who clocked 9.91 in the 100m at the British Championships last weekend, and Dwain Chambers have been included in the squad, with European U23 100m champion Adam Gemili contesting the 200m.

British Athletics performance director Neil Black said: "The team selected are a mix of defending champions, potential medallists, finalists and some really exciting young talents that we see as future medallists.

"Last weekend's British Championships was a brilliant stage for the world trials, and we saw some world class performances. It gave the selectors a real opportunity to see the athletes in championship mode and we were not disappointed.

"A year on from the Games and it is great to look forward to Moscow with the selected team, as we take our first steps in the build up towards Rio 2016 and London 2017."

Dawkins wins keirin, Archbold leads in Australia

Kiwi sprinters Eddie Dawkins and Simon van Velthooven have carried their strong form in Europe on to success at the first day of the international track cycling series in Adelaide.

Dawkins has won the keirin with the Olympic medallist van Velthooven third as they shut the Australians off of the podium at the Adelaide Super-Drome last night.

The BikeNZ contingent are competing in five days of UCI Tier One competition which carries qualifying points for upcoming World Cup events, which in turn qualify riders and teams for the World Championships.

Timaru rider Shane Archbold, currently contracted to the UCI Pro Continental road team An Post Sean Kelly in Europe, returned to the track with success to lead the men’s omnium competition after the first of two days.

Dawkins, who turns 24 today, was in impressive form. He won his stacked heat that included compatriot Matt Archibald and Ethan Mitchell, who both missed out in the repechage.

The big Southland rider dominated the final to finish clear of Malaysia’s Josiah Ng and van Velthooven, who had won his heat against five Australians.

Archbold, in his first track competition since the London Olympics, was second in the flying lap in 13.499s, third in the points race and he won the elimination over compatriot Pieter Bulling (Invercargill), who is part of the BikeNZ endurance track squad based in Europe.

That leaves Archbold clear at the top after three events on six points ahead of Australians Alex Edmondson on eight and Scott Law 15 while Bulling is fifth on 18 points.

Mid-Canterbury cyclist Lauren Ellis and fellow Olympian Jaime Nielsen are in third and fifth positions respectively in the women’s omnium.

Ellis (Hinds) was third in the flying lap and elimination and fourth in the points race to be on 10 points behind Australian Isabelle King who won all three opening day disciplines.

Dunedin’s Katie Schofield finished ninth in the women’s keirin won by Hong Kong’s Wai Sze Lee over Olympic sprint gold medallist Anna Meares.

Today’s action features the final three events in the omnium, men’s and women’s sprint and junior endurance events.

Hallelujah! Tim Tebow NFL Pilgrimage Leads to New England

I don't want to promote myself as an all-seeing, omnipotent NFL genius or anything, but I knew this was going to happen.

Tim Tebow is too good an athlete to be completely ignored by the NFL, and so in an amazingly short period of time, Tebow has gone from an unwanted free agent, cast aside by the New York Jets, to a New England Patriot.

Granted, Tebow probably didn't have many other offers, if any. That's evident from his two-year, no guarantee contract.

But, at least we should all find out finally whether this polarizing figure can play in the NFL or not.

The good news for Tebow fans is if he makes the team, he will be in the perfect environment to work on that hitch in his throwing motion and to learn from some of the best offensive talent and brains in the league.

For his detractors, well there is no good news other than the fact they will still have Tebow to kick around at least for a time. More on that here.
