When Illinois State offered a scholarship to Jordan de los Reyes before her junior season last spring, the Redbirds showed they understood what all of Quad-Cities softball already knew -- the Moline backstop is a special power hitter.
Yet, not until her recently completed senior season could anyone fully appreciate de los Reyes is a slugger for the ages.
Despite one of the craziest spring's weather-wise limiting Moline to 31 games -- down about a dozen contests from a normal campaign -- de los Reyes capped one of the state's greatest careers at the plate with an equally staggering season.
This year's Metro Softball Player of the Year for The Dispatch and The Rock Island Argus batted an amazing .535 this spring, tying for 15th in homers (15) and 25th in RBIs (63) in the IHSA's single-season recordbook.
De los Reyes also became one of only 16 players all-time statewide to record 10 consecutive hits.
