Authorities Looking For Answers After Missing Father Of Two Found In Burning Car
FONTANA (CBSLA.com) — Four days after a Fontana man was kidnapped from his driveway and killed, investigators are still looking for answers.
The body of Alejandro Padilla, 40, was found inside a burning vehicle, which was confirmed to have belonged to the victim, after it was reported he went missing early Friday morning.
The vehicle was found in a public park in the 1000 block of Etiwanda Street in Rialto, about six miles from his home on Beechcraft Avenue.
Neighbors report that the neighborhood is normally peaceful and the park, where Padilla’s remains were found, is known as a family-friendly area.
“It’s a nice family neighborhood,” Rialto resident Edgar Samperio said, “Makes no sense, really.”
Padilla, a father of two, was reportedly heading to work when the kidnapping ensued.
Investigators suggest that Padilla may have tried to fight off the assailants, as evidence of a bloody struggle was found in his driveway.
Residents and authorities alike are now hoping to find answers through a number of security cameras, which are set up at the park.
Police, however, are not saying what, if any, video they were able to get from the cameras.
No arrests have yet been made.

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Christian Benitez, a soccer star from Ecuador who led the Mexican league in scoring last season, died Monday a day after playing in a game for his club in Qatar. He was 27.
The Qatari club El Jaish provided no details about the death but said Benitez did not complain about his health Sunday. The team is awaiting a medical report.
El Jaish played Qatar Sports in the Sheik Jassim Cup, a warmup tournament for the upcoming season. The club said this was Benitez’s first game with his new team.
The game was played in hot and humid conditions typical of the Persian Gulf this time of year. Qatar will host the 2022 World Cup and the searing heat has prompted many in soccer to call for the tournament to be moved to winter.
Benitez, a powerful striker, joined El Jaish after helping his Mexican club America win the championship last season.
“He was a player that over the short period he was here was regarded for his high moral character,” El Jaish said in a statement.
Benitez had 24 goals in 58 appearances for Ecuador and was on its 2006 World Cup team. He also scored against Chile in the 2007 Copa America and had four goals during qualifying for the 2014 World Cup
Benitez also spent a season in England with Birmingham. In Mexico, he played with one of the country’s most popular teams. On its website the team mourned “one of the most recent America idols, and shares the sorrow felt by the entire Benitez Betancourt family, and the sport in Mexico, Ecuador and the world.”

Local Group Works To Bring Back Smiles After 2010 Devastating Quake In Haiti
STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — Three-and-a-half years after a 7.0-magnitude quake hit Haiti, it has been a long road to recovery. But one local group, Smile 4 Haiti, is working to make a difference in people’s lives.
The non-profit organization was started by Marvin Bien-Aime to assist children with limited financial means, resources, and support.
“The reason why I started it is because I wanted to help bring back smiles to the faces of those children in Haiti. There are still kids out there that are in need. They don’t have food. They don’t have water. And they just don’t have the basic needs to live in harmony,” Bien-Aime said on KCAL9 News on Sunday morning.

Rick Warren Returns To Pulpit 16 Weeks After Son’s Death
LAKE FOREST (CBSLA.com) — Evangelical megachurch Pastor Rick Warren returned to the pulpit this weekend for the first time since his son’s suicide 16 weeks ago.
The church reached full capacity with more than 5,600 people present as Warren delivered his first sermon at Saddleback Church in Lake Forest on Saturday afternoon. Three additional services are expected to be held Sunday beginning at 9 a.m.
Warren, the author of the best-seller “The Purpose Driven Life,” sent an email to his congregation of more than 20,000 on Friday to alert them of his return. Both he and his wife, Kay, walked out to a standing ovation with tear-filled eyes.
The 59-year-old Warren’s return to the pulpit comes four months after his son, Matthew, committed suicide at his Mission Viejo home after battling mental illness and depression for most of his life.
“For 27 years, I prayed every day of my life for God to heal my son’s mental illness. It was the number one prayer of my life and it didn’t make sense. What was happening didn’t make sense. We had the best doctors. We had the best medicine. We went to the best therapist. We had the most people praying. We have a family of deep, deep faith. It just didn’t make sense,” Warren said.
The church announced Matthew’s death on April 6. The 27-year-old died a day prior to that announcement.
Warren said he plans to devote his life and his ministry to helping people with mental illness.
Founded in 1980, Saddleback Church serves a large Southern California community with several locations.
