Screenwriter Blasts World Market After Being Kicked Out Of Store For ‘Following Women Around’

SHERMAN OAKS (CBSLA.com) — The screenwriter behind Hollywood animated hits “Puss in Boots” and “Hop” has taken aim at World Market after he said a store manager accused him of following women around.

Brian Lynch, 40, said he went to the retail store in Sherman Oaks on Sunday with his sister and 10-year-old adopted niece, who were visiting from New Jersey.

Lynch said while he was was watching the youngster in the candy aisle, a manager named “Summer” accused him of following women around and creeping them out.

The manager then asked Lynch to leave the store.

The writer took his outrage to Twitter, where he posted, “I was horrified. Made to look like some weird pervert at @worldmarket. I had no idea what Summer was talking about.”

He added, “I was loudly shamed, kicked out, and accused of something horrific in front of my 10 year old niece in @worldmarket. By the manager.”

Lynch said video cameras inside the store will show he did nothing wrong.

In a statement, World Market spokesperson Jill Osaka said, “We are speaking directly with Mr. Lynch about his experience at our Sherman Oaks store over the weekend. Cost Plus World Market prides itself on providing a welcoming shopping environment. We are taking steps to fully understand what occurred and will continue to work with Mr. Lynch.”

Lynch tweeted late Monday that World Market has since apologized, and the situation should be resolved by Tuesday.

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Olympic silver medalists April Ross and Jennifer Kessy beat top-ranked Brazilians Talita Antunes and Taiana Lima 15-21, 21-18, 17-15 on Sunday in the inaugural World Series Cup final.

Ross and Kessy won after finishing 16th in the FIVB Grand Slam.

“It feels good that our name will be the first on that cup forever. It will be nice to see my name on that cup when I come watch this tournament in 20 years,” Kessy said. “There’s a million FIVB tournaments, but this World Series Cup, being in the U.S. and the first time, it’s something special.”

The Brazilians won the FIVB Grand Slam event on Friday.

“I don’t know if it should, but this takes some of the sting out of losing the FIVB tournament,” Ross said. “After a loss it feels so good to have this extra opportunity to go out on a win. It feels great to beat the top Brazilian team in what is possibly our last year together, and to do it in front of our families. It couldn’t be better circumstances to win the first World Series Cup.”

Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson completed the U.S. sweep, beating Latvia’s Alesandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins 22-20, 20-11 in the men’s final.

New Zealanders prepare for World Team Championships in Hamburg

Hamburg this weekend plays host to the latest round of the ITU World Triathlon Series and then hosts the ITU Elite Mixed Relay World Championships, with the athletes backing up on consecutive days to chase individual points and a team’s title for their nation.

Racing on the Saturday is over the sprint distance (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run) while those involved in the Mixed Teams World Championship on theSunday race over a super sprint distance (300m swim, 6.6km bike, 1.6km run), with each athlete completing the distance before tagging a team mate until all four have completed the course.

New Zealand will be represented this weekend by Andrea Hewitt (Christchurch – 9th on world rankings), Kate McIlroy (Wellington – 12th), Rebecca Kingsford (Tirau) in the women’s race and Ryan Sissons (Auckland – 9th), Tony Dodds (Wanaka – 23rd) and Bryce McMaster (Auckland – 53rd) in the men’s, with Kingsford and McMaster standing by as reserves for the Teams race on Sunday.

Triathlon NZ National Coach Greg Fraine talks of the balance on such a weekend.

“The athletes prepare for both events and in our case we have come together well. We have a very even team, a group of athletes who know each other well and have a desire to perform well for each other and for New Zealand. The focus initially is Saturday and the individual race, we will then go into recovery mode and prepare for Sunday.

“They understand this format well now and as far back as Kinloch this year we were rehearsing for this weekend’s event. We are a team who can race in an attacking mindset or race more defensively depending on the situation. Our order though is pretty set, we have a good leader in Andrea who will lead out, Kate will be third and we will decide on Ryan and Tony in regards racing second and fourth.”

Fraine says while the focus this season remains the season ending Grand Final in London when athletes will be looking to qualify for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, there are goals at each event along the way.

“The focus is London, but each race during the season is a good test of where we are at and a reflection of how training is going. Of course we are always hoping for top ten results but we are also focused on the process of going through each discipline, concentring on performance with results following on from that, all of which leads us towards London.”

Tony Dodds is feeling in much better condition than before the latest ITU World Triathlon Series race at Kitzbuehel where a calf strain hindered his preparation.

“I am definitely feeling better than Kitzbuehel, I was a little rough as a result of a calf strain and had only started running five days out from that race. But I had my first track and hard session last week, so all been good leading into this race, I’m looking forward to it.”

As for the backing up on consecutive days, 23rd ranked Dodds is not concerned.

“We’ve done it before, we just take it one step at a time, recovery after the race is vital to prepare for Sunday, but we are all in the same boat, from our perspective it will be very organised with nothing left to chance. We have a strong team with a good spirit amongst us, some have one person who is not so strong as the others but we have four strong athletes and will race hard for each other.”

Kate McIlroy raced well on the Hamburg course last year in the lead up to the London Olympics and is ready for the weekend.

“I’ve been looking forward to this for a few months; we had a pre-run in Kinloch earlier this year so it has been a long time coming. Being involved with the team you do feel some pressure not to let anyone down but we can all handle that and if anything it makes us perform better. We have lived together and trained together for the last few months and know each other pretty well.”

McIlroy spoke of her season now building towards the London Grand Final and the main aim of qualifying for the Commonwealth Games next year.

“The main goal this season is London, to race well in the Grand Final and to qualify for Glasgow. It has been a long season but we enjoyed a good training block at altitude and have laid a good foundation for the next few months of racing leading into London, with Hamburg this weekend and then Stockholm along the way.”

Lakers: World Peace muss gehen

"Glaubt Ihr wirklich alles, was ich sage?", ließ World Peace, NBA-Champion von 2010, einige Tweets später verlauten.

Metta World Peace bleibt nun doch in der NBA.

Kiwi ingenuity behind UCI BMX World Championships

Kiwi innovation is a key part in this month’s UCI BMX World Championships in Auckland.

The 32nd BMX World Championships will be staged in the world-class Vector Arena on Auckland’s waterfront from 24-28 July.

The move to indoor arenas for the sport has become more common, offering an all-weather spectacular for competitors and fans alike.

However it can create challenges for the track construction. For the past three years there have been two separate starting ramps built for the BMX World Championships – an 8m ramp for elites and 5m ramp for Challenge (age group) racing.

The confines of Vector Arena meant there was insufficient room to build two separate ramps, meaning that the event’s operations manager, Tony Takarua from Elite Racing Developments New Zealand had to come up with an innovative solution.

The indoor track at the Vector Arena will include three tracks in one, with all classes sharing the same starting ramp and first straight. It is the first time since the introduction of two different starting heights for Challenge and Elite riders, that the two classes will share the same ramp.

After the two days of Challenge (age group) racing on Wednesday July 24 and Thursday July 25, the start ramp will be modified from five metres high to eight metres for the Elite racing at the weekend. At the same time the first straight will undergo slight modifications in order to host the weekend competitions.

“We came up with the concept of building a single split-level ramp structure with a longer platform for the 5m ramp,” said Takarua. “After Challenge races, with the use of hydraulics, the 5m ramp is repositioned to 8m.

“We are really pleased with the concept. We have built and tested it out and I think this could become a blueprint for cities around the world that want to run the championships in indoor arenas.”

The transformation will take place overnight after Challenge racing. The Junior and Elite Women will use the Challenge section of the second straight, while the Junior and Elite Men will ride on the adjacent Pro section.

Takarua is well known for his track building skills, having led the construction of New Zealand’s sole Supercross track at Pukekohe, the first permanent track to run Elite and Challenge ramps and tracks side by side and the first to use adjustable jumps.

His team will build the ramp and provide the construction team for the track, to be managed by the London Olympic track builders, Clark and Kent Contractors.

The English company has been involved in many projects with multiple national tracks in England, USA, remedial work at the World Cycling Centre at Aigle in Switzerland and the track for the London Olympics which won them worldwide acclaim.

Construction of the track in Vector Arena will take six days involving approximately 10,000 pallets and 60 truck and trailer loads of specially prepared dirt.

Organisers expect more than 2000 riders from 30 countries for the championships, although entries to not close until 12 July.

The Championships begin with the Challenge class (age group) on Wednesday 24 July and Thursday 25 July, with elite practice on Friday ahead of the time trial world title decided on Saturday 27 July and finals on Sunday 28 July.

The event has received the backing of Telecom, Major Events, Sport New Zealand, ATEED, Avanti Bikes, Avanti Finance, Pub Charity, Lion Foundation, Anchor, The Radio Network, Pullman Hotels, Tissot Timing and Santini.

McNeice enters a whole new triathlon world

New Zealand’s rising long-distance triathlon star Dylan McNeice is finding out what his back to back wins in Challenge events earlier this year have done for his career as he prepares for his first tilt at the famous Challenge Roth race in Germany this weekend.

Renowned for its fast times, Roth welcomes a stellar field that includes McNeice as one of the headliners after his incredible performances in winning his first two starts over the full distance (3.8km swim, 180km bike, 42.2km run) in Wanaka and Taiwan earlier this year.

As the small Bavarian town of Roth prepares for the influx of athletes and over 200,000 spectators, increasing its regular population ten-fold, at today’s media conference the stars of the race gave their comments, predictions and why Challenge Roth has been held in such high regard throughout the triathlon world for so long.

McNeice spoke about his quest to focus only on his own race, and not on those around him.

“From 12 months ago when I was going to retire from triathlon, this is a whole new world for me. It’s a good feeling, it’s taken me a long time to get here, I’m happy to be sitting up here and have pressure on me. There are so many good guys racing, it’s going to be really fast and hopefully a sub eight for a Kiwi male. Cameron Brown and I are both chasing it. But I’m going to stick to my own race plan, put the blinkers on and race my own race. I’ll aim for that eight-hour barrier and if I get close to that, regardless of my position in the race, I’ll be happy.”

McNeice is coached by Tri NZ Talent Development Coach Tim Brazier, who spoke of the prospect of a sub 8 hour race for his charge.

“It is a great opportunity for Dylan to race against the world’s best, on a day that could unfold very differently for him to his previous wins.  With other fast swimmers racing such as Maik Petzold (Germany) the dynamics of the race will be very different to Wanaka and Taiwan when he was out on his own early. I am confident however that Dylan will still make great decisions out there as his “race intelligence” is such a strength, and is a big part of why he has accelerated so fast into Iron distance racing.

“If the conditions and race dynamics play their part, I think there is every opportunity that Dylan could go a sub eight hour race, and that would be something really special for him to achieve in his first year as an Iron distance pro, I know I’ll be pulling an all-nighter to watch it unfold!”

McNeice is in the unusual position of relegating legendary Kiwi Cameron Brown to support-star status, although 40 year old Brown is also well capable of a podium finish as he backs up from a 4th place finish at Roth last year. Brown is enjoying a wide variety of races and venues in 2013, already with Fiji and the Philippines on his CV this year; he will be a podium threat in Roth once again.

New Zealand is represented in the strong women’s field with the evergreen Joanna Lawn on the start line. Lawn is a 7 time winner of Ironman NZ since 2003 and has been enjoying a year of ‘different’ races in 2013, choosing her schedule more on personal preference than previous years. Lawn is a previous winner at Roth, taking out the 2006 event.

All the action from DATEV Challenge Roth can be watched live online at www.challenge-roth.com from 4.00pm NZT on Sunday 14 July.

The Challenge Family celebrates the sport of triathlon through its global series of long distance events and festivals that are changing the face of long distance racing around the world with its focus on athlete experience. Reade withdraws from UCI BMX World Championships

British Cycling has today confirmed that Shanaze Reade has withdrawn from the forthcoming UCI BMX World Championships, which are scheduled to take place in Auckland from 24 – 28th July.

Shanaze sustained a knee injury after falling during a training camp in Papendal in early July. GB Cycling Team’s physiotherapist Phil Burt explains: “Shanaze has worked hard to recover from her recent knee injury but unfortunately time has run out for her to be in competitive form at the World Championships.”

Speaking of the decision, Shanaze said: "Having won every major race this year I was confident and excited to race in New Zealand, this was one of my biggest goals for 2013. To miss out on the World Championships is really disappointing. However, my team and I believe this is definitely the correct decision. It will be a short period of recovery and the plan is to come back stronger for the rest of the year."

Walker confident of start in UCI BMX World Championship in Auckland

Olympic silver medallist Sarah Walker is confident she will be on the start ramp for next week’s UCI BMX World Championships in Auckland.

Walker still has her arm in a brace after suffering a hairline fracture of her radius after a crash racing in the United States recently.

The 25 year old plans to be back on her bike this week and is determined to compete in the world championships in her home country from 24-28 July.

“If it was not in New Zealand then I would probably consider skipping it because of the injury,” Walker said at a World Championship promotion at Sylvia Park at the weekend.

“This is the first time the worlds have been in New Zealand and most likely it won’t be back here while I am still competing. I’ve raced 10 straight years at the world championships and it would suck to miss the 11th one when it is here in New Zealand.”

BikeNZ’s BMX Coach Ryan Hollows said the fracture is healing faster than expected and medical advice confirmed that Walker should be able to compete.

“She won’t be 100 per cent but we are confident she will make it. The facture is healing quickly and Sarah is doing everything she can, with twice daily ultra-sound treatments.

“She is a very tough person. Sarah battled with a broken shoulder with little racing behind her and yet won a silver medal at London.”

Hollows is pleased with the development of the high performance squad after returning from training and racing in the USA.

“Sarah was finding some really good form so the crash was a pity. She will come in to the championships with no expectations and you just never know because she is such a talented rider.

“Kurt Pickard is starting find some outstanding form and the other guys are really developing well.”

The team leave for Queensland tomorrow where they will complete their final preparations on the Supercross track near Brisbane.

“The racing and training in the US was just what we needed. Of course there were no high ramps there, so the eight days in Brisbane will be plenty of time for the riders to dial in to the 8m ramp and big jumps ready for the championships.”

The team returns to Auckland on 25 July with their first official training session on the track at Vector Arena on Friday 27 July with elite racing starting the following day.

Work began today on building the ramp and track in Vector Arena and will be completed this weekend.

Alastair Cook denies England are too reliant on 'world class' James Anderson

By talkSPORT | Sunday, July 14, 2013

Alastair Cook hailed the ‘outstanding, world class’ Jimmy Anderson after he bowled England to victory at Trent Bridge - and then insisted his side is not over-reliant on the leader of their attack.

The Lancashire paceman took five wickets in the second innings to go with his ‘five-fer’ in Australia’s first knock as the hosts sealed a dramatic win by just 14 runs.

Anderson bowled 13 successive overs in searing heat during the morning session on day five in Nottingham, and his captain was hugely appreciative of his efforts.

Cook said: "Jimmy was outstanding. He always wants one more over - I think 13 was probably quite a lot in that first hour!”

But Cook denied his side was too reliant on their pace spearhead.

“No, not at all,” he added. “He's a world-class bowler and you sometimes use him in these situations when you know there's a timeframe. He had an amazing rhythm in this game.

"But [Stuart] Broad and [Steven] Finn have done outstandingly well for us over a huge amount of time, but it just happened to be Jimmy's day and Jimmy's game. Sometimes it happens like that."
